The bright colors, with green and purple tones, integrate well into the nearby park lands and are joyful enough for a space designed with children in mind. The roofs are landscaped and the designers began their work by studying hospitals for a project that would be as efficient as possible.
They explain that “the Queensland project was an opportunity to contest these prevailing paradigms; to radically rethink both the care model and the way in which the building might contribute to the city as a civic marker and as the touchstone for the Brisbane community.” There are two vertical atria with a double height in the center that branch in a manner similar to that of a tree to create a series of external balconies that offer an overview of the city.
